PROJECT BRIEF: THE FLOCK
The Flock is my final major project from my Graphic Design and Illustration degree. This is a hypothetical rebrand of the ‘Youth Action Panel’ for 14-22 year olds at RSPB Rainham Marshes in Essex - a group of volunteers who support the RSPB with conservation activities. The RSPB are striving towards breaking down barriers for young people in the Greater Thames Area to engage with nature, such as discrimination and limited access to green spaces. I was very keen to get on board with this and create a solution which engages, educates, and empowers young people to play an active role in nature conservation. The solution had to be refreshing, unconventional, and different from current RSPB branding.
Having partnered with the RSPB in my second year, the collaboration continued into my final year. I spent much of the year meeting with the Community Engagement Team and the Youth Action Panel, conducting site visits, focus groups, and live pitches to obtain feedback that shaped the final design outcomes.
SOLUTION
A welcome pack designed to encourage new volunteers to join The Flock, featuring a new logo and wildlife illustrations of birds and insects from the Rainham reserve. The pack contains a personal volunteering handbook, an ID card, a lanyard, and milestone pin badges awarded after completing a certain number of volunteering hours. It also includes sticker sheets and redesigned RSPB pin badge backing cards, which have been created to broaden the appeal of the popular RSPB pins to a new audience.
